Dayrel McFarland, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jamal Barney, 37, on Thursday, Feb. 8, according to Baltimore Police.

Investigators believe McFarland shot and killed Barney on the 500 block of North Payson Street on Oct. 2, 2023.

Barney started his career in Providence College as a freshman after a standout career at Southwestern High School. He sat out a year, then became Loyola's most prolific scorer for two years before his graduation, including a second-team all-MAAC selection.

Tributes had flooded social media following his passing.

McFarland was charged at the Central Booking Intake Facility.
